Fact or Opinion? Hmmmmm….

September 28, 2007

I would like your group to read these two pieces of writing and determine which is an opinion and which is fact. You must give evidence by telling us what an opinion is and what a fact is.

1. I think that every student in America should be bilingual. I don’t think that every student needs to know Spanish necessarily; it could be German, French, Chinese, Arabic, or another language. I find it funny that some of my students think that the word “bilingual” means “knows Spanish.” It seems to me that people who know more than one language have a greater tendency to have knowledge of other cultures as well. I have lived in Rome without knowing Italian and I have lived in Oaxaca while learning Spanish. I love the city of Rome, but I became more attached to Oaxaca because I was able to talk to and connect to the people of the city in an in-depth way. I now find myself more eager to learn about French culture, Islamic culture, and a slew of other cultures. I believe has a direct connection to my experiences as a second language leaner. I guess you could say that I’m an ESL student, “Espanol as a Second Language.”

2. I have visited 13 different countries in North America and Europe. I would like to visit Asia and Australia in the near future as well. My favorite country to visit is Italy, but the country that I still have the most friends from is Mexico. I learned to speak Spanish when I was in Oaxaca, Mexico. Incidentally, that was where the film Nacho Libre was filmed. I would like to go back with my wife and brothers some day to learn the language even better.
